Gatlinburg Area Waterfalls

There are many waterfalls in the Gatlinburg area to see and hear. Below is a list of some of more beautiful waterfalls that are just a short drive Grotto Falls - Photo Dave Wismer IIfrom Gatlinburg to the trail head that leads to them. While the waterfalls are beautiful to behold they can be dangerous and life threatening because the rocks can be slippery which causes falls and the currents can be treacherous. Enjoy the falls with great care.

Before visiting the falls we highly recommend that you visit the Sugarland's Welcome center at the entrance to the park for more detailed information and directions

Abrams Falls

This waterfall has the highest water flow volume of any fall in the park and is among the most photogenic. Abrams Falls is a 5-mile roundtrip hike. The trail begins in the back of Cades Cove loop road and is a moderate hike.

Chasteen Creek Falls

Chasteen Falls is small, but graceful. The 4 mile scenic trail begins in the Smokmont Campground.

Grotto Falls

Grotto Falls is distinctive as the only waterfall in the park one can walk behind. From the trail head on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, it is a 2.4 mile roundtrip hike through a hemlock- dominated forest to the falls.

Indian Creek Falls and Tom's Branch Falls

From the Deep Creek area it is a 1.5 mile roundtrip hike to Indian Creek Falls with anither beautiful water fall, Tom's Branch Falls, along the way. Indian Creek Falls is 35 feet of sloping rock strata where the rushing waters freshen and cool the air.

Henwallow Falls

From Cosby Campground, south of Cosby, Tennessee you make the moderate 4.4 miles roundtrip hike to Henwallow Falls. While Henwallow is a beautiful waterfall, it is less visited than most waterfalls in the park because of it's location, so the opportunity to have the falls to yourself is much greater here.

Laurel Falls

Laurel Falls is perhaps the easiest waterfall hike near Gatlinburg and usually has the most visitors of any fall in the park. During the busy times of the year, it is recommended to arrive early in order to avoid the crowds. It is 2.5 miles roundtrip, and follows a paved trail. The trail cuts through the middle of a series of cascades. Laurel Falls is 60 feet high.

Rainbow Falls

At 80 feet, is the highest single plunge water takes in the park. It is a 5.5-mile roundtrip hike. It is rated between moderate and strenuous. This trail makes a good challenge and reveals a beautiful fall. These are the Smokies' most popular falls.

Ramsay Cascades

A strenuous 8-mile roundtrip hike. The trail head begins in the Greenbrier Area. A magnificent scene, Ramsey Cascades tumbles over 100 feet in a spectacular setting.
